The Chicago Bears announced the firing of offensive coordinator Shane Waldron following a disappointing offensive stretch. The move came after the team’s 19-3 loss to the New England Patriots, which extended their losing streak to three games. Despite high expectations fueled by the arrival of No. 1 draft pick quarterback Caleb Williams, the Bears’ offense has struggled to find rhythm, managing only two touchdowns over the past 34 drives.
After a promising start to the season, where the Bears hit a 4-2 record, their offensive production began to decline sharply. Williams, who showed potential early in the season with seven touchdowns and high completion rates, has since struggled under pressure, completing just over 50% of his passes with no touchdowns in recent games. The offensive line’s inconsistent protection and injuries have contributed to these struggles, leaving Williams frequently sacked and under duress.
In response to these issues, head coach Matt Eberflus made the decision to promote passing game coordinator Thomas Brown to offensive coordinator. Eberflus described Brown as a “bright offensive mind” with a collaborative approach, suggesting optimism for a new offensive direction. However, with the Bears facing six NFC North matchups in their final eight games, their path to improvement will be challenging. The pressure is also mounting on Eberflus, as his tenure has yet to yield a winning season, sparking fan frustrations and calls for broader changes within the coaching staff.
This move highlights the Bears’ intent to reset their offensive identity in hopes of salvaging the season. With a revamped offensive lineup and high-profile acquisitions in the offseason, including wide receiver Keenan Allen and running back D’Andre Swift, the Bears are looking to deliver on their promise of a competitive season and ensure Williams’ development under Brown’s new leadership.
