DePaul’s men’s basketball team has kicked off its 2024-25 season with a strong 3-0 start, signaling promising signs under new head coach Chris Holtmann. This marks a fresh era for the Blue Demons, as they overhaul their roster with a mix of transfers and newcomers. Holtmann, who replaced Tony Stubblefield after last year’s challenging 3-29 campaign, has revitalized the program with 13 new players, including transfers from both mid-major and high-major programs.
The team’s early success can be attributed to several standout transfers. Conor Enright, a point guard from Drake, and Isaiah Rivera, a shooting guard from UIC, have brought instant leadership to the backcourt. Enright’s shooting ability, particularly from three-point range (43.9%), and Rivera’s all-around scoring (15 points per game at UIC) have significantly upgraded the team’s offensive capabilities. Additionally, forward NJ Benson, a transfer from Missouri State, has added depth to the frontcourt, alongside other experienced players like David Skogman from Davidson and Jacob Meyer from Coastal Carolina .
These new faces have meshed well with returning players like Layden Blocker, who is expected to make an impact this season despite his limited role in his freshman year at Arkansas. The team’s defense has also improved, with the new lineup showcasing better overall balance .
In their first three games, DePaul has demonstrated improved team chemistry and offensive firepower. While these wins have come against non-conference opponents, they provide a solid foundation for the team’s upcoming Big East schedule. Fans and analysts alike are cautiously optimistic, with the Blue Demons showing they can be competitive early on, which bodes well for Holtmann’s long-term rebuilding project.
